Why Pacific Coast Advocates?
If you have landed on our website, it’s highly likely that you are looking for support and guidance to help you cope with the organizational, psychological and emotional challenges you may be experiencing in connection with your child’s special education.
It can be tough, and we would love to help. Here’s what makes Pacific Coast Advocates unique to work with.
All our advocates are highly qualified
In addition to having a college degree, all special education advocates in the PCA team have a certificate from USD in Special Education Advocacy and Law. Our advocates are outstanding communicators and will use mediation skills to collaborate with school. On top of having a certificate from USD and being experienced in special education advocacy, all our advocates are also parents or guardians of children with special needs.
Why is all this important?
As you search for a special education advocate in San Diego, bear in mind that there are no minimum educational requirements, no specific training, and no continuing educational requirements for someone to call themselves special education advocates. This is why it is very important to do your homework before agreeing to work with an advocate. At PCA all the advocates are well-educated in one or more of the following areas: education, law, mediation, assessments, and social work. This expertise is brought to bear on all of the cases. The diversity and breadth of experience and education combine to make the advocacy services Pacific Coast Advocates offers truly exceptional.
Unique, dual approach (co-advocacy)
Pacific Coast Advocates offers you a unique opportunity to work with one or two (2) advocates when you choose our advocacy or coaching services. This is unlike any other special education advocacy or parent coaching model. You can choose to work with two professionals with different areas of strength, knowledge and background to get access to even more expertise, knowledge and balance in the facilitation of a child-centered solution.
Why work with two advocates?
PCA’s philosophy is the same as the idea of an IEP team. An IEP team is formed by including different professionals who specialize in one area of expertise because no one person can be an expert in everything. The school provides an administrator, a special education teacher, a general education teacher, a school psychologist (when assessments are being presented), and other specialists (such as a speech and language therapist, occupational therapist, physical therapist etc.) as appropriate. Each professional is to bring his/her background, education and knowledge to the table to help the team best meet the child’s needs.
If you are unsure whether you’d like to work with one or two advocates, feel free to reach out to us for a no-cost, no-obligation 30-minute phone consultation to discuss your needs and help you make an informed decision.
Coaching over the phone and the Internet
Pacific Coast Advocates offer coaching in person, over the phone or via a secure Internet platform.
